UPS Hits $11.90 and FedEx $11.85 Per Package at Peak — Here's How to Protect Holiday Margins
If you ship products, your holiday costs are already climbing. UPS and FedEx began package-based peak surcharges in late September, and service-based charges start in the last week of October. USPS raised several package prices on October 4. Here are the exact numbers and dates, drawn from carrier-fee reporting by Inc. and Shippo, and what to do about them. Carrier fees can differ under negotiated contracts, so check your own agreement.
UPS: package surcharges are live, service charges start October 25
UPS package-based surcharges began September 27, 2026 and run through January 16, 2027.
- Additional Handling: $8.75 through November 21, $11.90 from November 22 to December 26, then $8.75 again.
- Large Package: $96.25, rising to $117.50 at peak.
- Over Maximum Limits: $530, rising to $590.
Service-based charges begin October 25. Ground Residential and Ground Saver add $0.50 per package, rising to $0.75 at peak. Next Day Air, 2nd Day Air and 3 Day Select add $1.35, rising to $2.50.
FedEx: similar timing, slightly different numbers
FedEx package-based surcharges began September 28 and run through January 17, 2027.
- Additional Handling: $8.80, rising to $11.85 from November 23 to December 27.
- Oversize: $95.75, rising to $117.25.
- Unauthorized: $535, rising to $595.
Service-based charges start October 26. Ground Residential and Home Delivery add $0.50, rising to $0.80 at peak. Ground Economy adds $2.55, rising to $4.05. Overnight services add $1.30, rising to $2.55, and 2Day and Express Saver add $1.20, rising to $2.35.
USPS: a built-in increase of about 6% on several services
USPS seasonal increases run from October 4, 2026 through January 17, 2027, rolling back to current levels afterward. Inc. reports increases of roughly 6% on several package services, ranging from $0.50 at the low end to $20 for the heaviest packages up to 70 pounds. On commercial rates for zones 1 to 4, Shippo lists $0.40 more for Priority Mail and Ground Advantage packages of 0 to 3 pounds, $1.40 more for Priority Mail Express, and $1.75 more for Large Flat Rate Boxes. Because the increase is built into commercial prices, it will not appear as a separate line on your invoice. USPS says the adjustment brings its prices "in line with competitive practices," and its rates remain well below its commercial competitors.
Amazon sellers face a separate schedule
Amazon's peak surcharges run in three periods: October 25 to November 21, November 22 to December 26, and December 27 to January 16. The per-package demand surcharge is 50 cents, then 75 cents, then back down, with additional handling, large package and extra-heavy fees matching the UPS ranges above.
Why the dates matter more than the totals
Peak ordering typically falls between November 22 and December 26, which is exactly when surcharges jump. A parcel needing additional handling that costs $8.75 on November 20 costs $11.90 two days later, a 36% increase. If your promotions drive volume to that window, you pay the highest rates on your busiest days.
Five steps to protect your margin
1. Find out which of your packages trigger handling fees
Additional handling and oversize charges depend on size, weight and packaging. Review a month of invoices and identify which products trigger them. A box that is slightly too long can cost you more than $8 extra.
2. Shift your promotion calendar
If possible, run sales or ship-by deadlines earlier in November, before November 22, when service and handling fees step up.
3. Re-price or add a holiday shipping line
Calculate your average added cost per order and decide whether to raise prices slightly, set a minimum for free shipping, or add a holiday surcharge. Be transparent at checkout so customers are not surprised.
4. Compare carriers by parcel type
USPS increases are smaller in dollar terms for light parcels, while heavy or bulky items face the steepest carrier fees. Quote each item with multiple carriers before the end of the month.
5. Check your negotiated contract
Shippo notes that negotiated contracts may treat these charges differently, and that FedEx and UPS also have higher volume-tier surcharges for shippers above 20,000 residential packages a week. Ask your rep what applies to you in writing.
Track the impact in your books
Shipping is easy to lose inside cost of goods. Break it out on your profit and loss statement so you can see whether peak surcharges are quietly erasing a promotion's profit. Keep holiday cash flow in a dedicated business bank account, and if you are borrowing for inventory, our SBA loan guide covers working-capital options.
Bottom line
The surcharges are not secret, and they are not going away before January 17. Owners who map their products to the fee schedule now, move promotions ahead of November 22 and price shipping deliberately will protect their holiday margins. Those who wait for the first peak-week invoice will find out the hard way.
