Square's New $1,999 Kiosk Takes Orders by Voice — What Restaurant Owners Really Pay Per Month

Square's New $1,999 Kiosk Takes Orders by Voice — What Restaurant Owners Really Pay Per Month

Square has launched a self-service kiosk that lets restaurant guests order by talking to it. The hardware costs $1,999, and the software adds $99 a month per device. For a quick-service owner weighing labor costs against a front-counter upgrade, the headline number is only part of the picture.

Below is what Square says the kiosk does, the full cost once you add the required subscription and card processing, and the limits worth knowing before you commit.

    What the kiosk does

According to Square's product page, guests can order by voice, by touch, or both, and can switch between the two at any point. They can describe an order in their own words, filter the menu (for example, to show kid-friendly items), and ask menu questions such as what is in a dish.

The device has a 21.5-inch display and a time-of-flight sensor that wakes the screen as guests approach. Three directional microphones with AI noise filtering are meant to help it hear guests in busy rooms. Payments are built in, with tap, dip and PIN, so no separate card reader is needed.

The kiosk also suggests add-ons. Square says upsell suggestions use your sales data, such as best sellers by location and time of day, and what is already in the guest's cart.

    The real cost

The sticker price is $1,999 for the hardware with a counter stand, and the total varies by stand type. Square also offers credit sale plans at $97 a month over 24 months. Those plans carry a 15% APR, require a purchase between $49 and $10,000, and are not available in Alabama, Delaware, Missouri, Mississippi, New Hampshire or Tennessee.

    Then the monthly costs begin:

    • Software: $99 a month per device with Square Plus.
    • Processing: 2.5% plus 15 cents per tap or dip with Square Plus. Custom rates are available for businesses processing $250,000 or more.
    • Required plan: an active Square Plus or Premium subscription. Owners on legacy plans, such as Restaurants POS Plus or Premium, must switch to a current Square plan.

Here is a simple way to run the first-year math for a single kiosk bought outright: $1,999 for hardware plus $1,188 in software ($99 times 12) comes to $3,187, before processing fees and before any change in your Square plan price. If you finance, the $97 monthly payment over 24 months adds up to $2,328, which is more than the sticker price because of the 15% APR.

    What else you need

The kiosk is not a standalone box. Square lists these requirements:

    • A floor, counter, wall, or compatible VESA mount
    • Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet
    • A Square account, with existing menus, prices and modifiers transferable
    • Kitchen displays and kitchen or receipt printers, sold separately, which currently must connect to Square POS hardware (direct receipt printer connection is listed as "coming soon")

If your kitchen runs on a different system, ask how orders will reach it before you buy.

    Limits to weigh

Square is clear about several constraints:

    • It is available in the US only and in English only.
    • Voice ordering may not suit extreme environments such as music venues, where Square recommends touch.
    • Square recommends placing multiple kiosks at least 24 inches apart.
    • Square does not guarantee higher sales and says results vary by business.

Returns are accepted within 30 days, and the warranty is two years, limited. Square also offers Kiosk Lite, which runs on an iPad with a Square Stand, as a lower-cost option.

Is it worth it? A break-even check

Because Square makes no sales promise, the decision comes down to your own numbers. Start with the monthly cost: $99 for software, plus the hardware spread over a period you choose. If you spread $1,999 across 24 months, that is roughly $83 a month, so a single kiosk costs about $182 a month before processing fees.

Next, estimate what it replaces or adds. Ask yourself:

    • How many orders a day does your counter lose because of long lines?
    • Would a kiosk free a cashier for the kitchen or for table service during rush hours?
    • How much would an average upsell have to add per order to cover about $182 a month?

If your average ticket is $12 and one extra item adds $2, the kiosk needs roughly 91 upsold orders a month to cover its cost at that estimate. That is an illustration of the math, not a prediction of results. Replace the figures with your own.

    Before you buy

    Check your Square plan first

If you are on a legacy plan, switching to Square Plus or Premium may change your monthly bill by itself. Get the new plan price in writing before counting the kiosk as a $99 add-on.

Test it in your noise level

Voice ordering depends on microphones hearing guests. If your dining room or counter is loud, use the 30-day return window to test it at your busiest hour.

    Account for the books

Treat the kiosk as equipment, track the subscription separately, and watch its effect in your profit and loss statement. If you finance the purchase, keep the payments in a dedicated business bank account so the cost is easy to trace. A financing agreement may also deserve a look from your accountant, and the equipment may be worth reviewing with your business insurance provider.

    The bottom line

Square's kiosk is priced for the owner who wants to try AI ordering without a large capital outlay: $1,999 plus $99 a month per device, on top of a Square Plus or Premium plan and processing fees. It is US and English only, it needs Square's kitchen hardware, and Square promises no sales lift. Run your own break-even math, then use the return window to test it where it will actually sit.
