Your Tax Extension Ends Thursday, October 15 — Here's What Missing It Costs Sole Proprietors
If you filed for an extension back in April, your time is almost up. Extended 2025 returns for sole proprietors, single-member LLC owners, and calendar-year C corporations are due this Thursday, October 15, 2026. After that, there is no second extension. Here is what the deadline covers, what a miss costs, and what you can still do in the next three days.
Who Is Affected
The October 15 date applies to anyone who filed Form 4868 for an individual return, which includes sole proprietors reporting business income on Schedule C and owners of single-member LLCs taxed as sole proprietorships. It also applies to calendar-year C corporations that filed Form 7004. Partnerships and S corporations had an extended deadline of September 15, so if that is you, the date has already passed.

An Extension Is Not an Extension to Pay
This is the part that catches owners off guard. Form 4868 and Form 7004 extend the time to file, not the time to pay. Interest and the failure-to-pay penalty have been running since April 15, 2026. If you owed tax in April and have not paid it, the clock has been ticking for six months.
What Missing the Deadline Costs
- Failure to file: 5% of the unpaid tax for each month or part of a month the return is late, capped at 25%.
- Minimum penalty: If the return is more than 60 days late, the penalty is at least $525 or 100% of the unpaid tax, whichever is less. The IRS lists $525 as the minimum for returns due after December 31, 2025.
- Failure to pay: 0.5% of the unpaid balance per month, also capped at 25%. It continues after the filing penalty maxes out.
- Combined rate: When both apply, the filing penalty is reduced by the payment penalty, so the two together total 5% per month (4.5% plus 0.5%) for the first five months.
- Interest: One published guide puts the IRS underpayment rate at 7% a year, compounded daily, for the third and fourth quarters of 2026. Confirm the current rate on the IRS site.
In plain numbers, if you owe $10,000 and file one month late, you would face roughly $500 in combined penalties plus interest. The difference between filing and not filing is stark: not filing costs about ten times more per month than not paying. That is why tax professionals say the same thing to anyone who cannot pay in full: file on time anyway.
If You Cannot Pay Everything
File the return by October 15 even if you cannot cover the balance. The IRS offers payment plans, and one tax resource notes that balances of $50,000 or less may qualify for a Simple Payment Plan, which costs $29 to set up online with direct debit. During an installment agreement, the monthly failure-to-pay rate drops from 0.5% to 0.25%.
You may also qualify for penalty relief. Filers with three prior years of on-time, penalty-free returns of the same type can generally avoid the failure-to-file and failure-to-pay penalties on a late return, though interest still applies. Check the IRS site for eligibility before assuming it covers you.
The Retirement Contribution Window Closes the Same Day
For sole proprietors and C corporations on extension, October 15 is the last day to set up and fund a SEP-IRA and still deduct it on the 2025 return. The money must actually land in the account by that date. For 2025, contributions can reach 25% of compensation, up to $70,000. For a self-employed filer, one published guide puts the working limit at roughly 20% of net self-employment earnings. If you have eligible employees, the same percentage of pay generally must be contributed for them.
A solo 401(k) works differently. Employee deferrals had to be elected by December 31, 2025, but employer profit-sharing contributions can still be made by the extended deadline.
Your Three-Day Checklist
- Confirm the extension was filed. Look for your Form 4868 acceptance notice or the payment you designated as an extension payment.
- Gather missing paperwork. That means corrected 1099s, K-1s, and your final year-end numbers. A current profit and loss statement makes the business side of the return far easier.
- Pay any balance electronically. IRS Direct Pay or EFTPS posts immediately, which avoids a timing problem on deadline day.
- Check your state. Many states follow the federal date, but some use different extension periods or require a separate form.
- Check disaster relief. Taxpayers in certain IRS-designated disaster areas have later deadlines, such as November 2, 2026.
- Fund a SEP-IRA if you plan to deduct it. Do not wait until Thursday afternoon for a bank transfer.
- Confirm e-file acceptance. A rejected return that is never fixed counts as unfiled. Software can slow down on the final day.
If you mail a paper return, send it by certified mail or another method with proof of mailing. Under the mailbox rule, a return postmarked by October 15 is timely.
Why This Matters for 2027
If this rush felt familiar, consider setting up a system now. Keep business income and expenses in a dedicated account (see our guide on a business bank account), and make quarterly estimated payments so there is no April surprise. The next estimated tax payment is due January 15, 2027. To avoid underpayment penalties for 2026, your withholding and estimates generally need to cover at least 90% of the 2026 tax, or 100% of 2025 tax (110% if your 2025 adjusted gross income was above $150,000).
The Bottom Line
Thursday is the end of the line for extended 2025 returns. File even if you cannot pay, pay what you can electronically, and use the same day to fund a SEP-IRA if it fits your plan. This article is general information, not tax advice, so talk to a tax professional about your situation.
