LegalZoom's New Free AI Assistant Tracks Your Filing Deadlines — Here's What to Check First

Missing a state annual report is one of the easiest ways for a small business to slip out of good standing, and one of the most avoidable. On October 29, 2026, LegalZoom announced a free AI assistant built to catch exactly that kind of problem: it reads your business's own records and tells you what is due next.

Here is what the tool does, who can use it, and how an owner should treat an AI that talks about compliance.

    What LegalZoom Announced

LegalZoom (Nasdaq: LZ) describes the AI Assistant as a personalized, AI-powered business partner for small business owners handling day-to-day operations. It answers questions in plain language using the customer's business data, suggests next steps, and connects the user to a licensed attorney or specialist when a question requires judgment.

The company says the assistant is free for all business owners. Its press release mentions no paid tiers. It is available now inside every customer's LegalZoom account, and the company says LegalZoom apps are also live in ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, Gemini, and Perplexity.

What It Reads From Your Account

The key difference from a general chatbot is the data source. According to the release, answers draw on the customer's entity record, including business type, formation state, registered agent, and address. That means the assistant does not have to guess which state's rules apply to you.

LegalZoom gives one example. A Texas LLC owner asking about good standing would be told the LLC is active, reminded that a Public Information Report is due May 15, and pointed to the filing product needed to complete it.

Tasks it is built to handle

    • Compliance and status checks, such as good standing and filing deadlines.
    • Finding the right product, including formation, amendments, DBAs, operating agreements, EINs, business licenses, registered agent service, annual reports, and Virtual Mail.
    • Pointing to partner offerings in business banking, credit, accounting, tax, payroll, and business insurance.

It Is Not Only for Existing Customers

LegalZoom says future business owners, and owners who have not formed a company yet or formed elsewhere, can create a free account and get guidance on what to file, in which state, and which product fits. If you are still deciding on an entity, our guides on LLC formation and LLC vs. S corp are a good companion before you commit to a filing.

    Early Usage Numbers

The company reports that since August, customers have engaged with the tool hundreds of thousands of times. The most common uses are checking business and account status, finding the right product, and tracking compliance deadlines. LegalZoom also says users return to their accounts nearly twice as often as comparable customers who do not use the assistant.

These are the company's own figures from a press release, so treat them as a description of engagement, not proof that the tool prevents missed filings.

    What to Keep in Mind

LegalZoom states that it provides access to independent attorneys and self-service tools, is not a law firm, and does not provide legal advice. That disclaimer matters. An AI assistant that answers compliance questions is a convenient first check, not a substitute for an attorney or accountant on a decision with real money attached.

There is also a built-in commercial angle. The assistant links answers to LegalZoom products and partner services. A reminder that a filing is due is useful; the product it recommends is still a sales path. You are free to file directly with your state, often for a lower fee than a third-party service charges.

    A Five-Minute Checklist for Owners

    1. Verify the state itself. If the assistant says you are in good standing, confirm on your Secretary of State website. The state record is the one that counts.
    2. Write down every deadline it names. Put annual report, franchise tax, and registered agent renewal dates on your own calendar rather than relying on one tool.
    3. Check your registered agent and address. The assistant works from the entity record. If you moved or changed agents, a stale record produces stale answers. Our EIN guide and business license guide explain what else should match.
    4. Do not paste sensitive data into side chats. Use the assistant inside your account, and keep account numbers and tax IDs out of general-purpose AI tools.
    5. Ask for a human on judgment calls. Entity changes, disputes, contracts, and tax elections deserve a licensed professional.

    Why This Matters Beyond LegalZoom

Formation and compliance providers are racing to turn static records into a conversation. For owners, the practical gain is simple: your deadlines are being tracked against your actual entity data. The risk is just as simple: an owner may assume the tool is watching everything when it only knows what is in its records.

Keep your own system for dates, keep your business bank account and books separate from personal ones, and use the assistant as a second set of eyes. Owners with insurance renewals or loan paperwork can pair it with our guides on business insurance and SBA loans.

    The Bottom Line

A free tool that reads your entity record and flags a coming filing is a real convenience, especially for owners who formed a company and then lost track of state requirements. Try it, confirm what it tells you with the state, and remember that LegalZoom itself says the assistant does not provide legal advice.
