Delaware Small Business Owners Get Free Coaching — Applications Close August 31

If you own a small business in Delaware and have been putting off a real look at your finances, your marketing, or your pitch to lenders, the state just gave you a deadline and a free coach to help you get there. Applications for the Business on Main Street Accelerator close August 31, 2026 — and the program costs nothing to join.

    What the Accelerator Actually Does

The Business on Main Street Accelerator is a joint initiative between the Delaware Division of Small Business and Launcher, a business coaching organization. It's an eight-week program built around six virtual sessions and two in-person sessions held in Dover, and it's aimed squarely at owners who already have a business running but need structure to take it to the next stage.

Unlike a lot of small business programming that stays at the level of general advice, this one gets into the specifics of each participant's operation. According to the Delaware Division of Small Business, the curriculum covers:

    • Building or refining a comprehensive business plan
    • A deep dive into the business's financial health, including cash flow and profitability
    • Developing a pitch deck for lenders or investors
    • Modern marketing strategy, including digital channels
    • One-on-one, individualized coaching sessions

Anastasia Jackson, coordinator for Delaware on Main Street, has said that participants consistently point to two things as the most valuable part of the program: the financial reviews and the personalized coaching. That tracks with what a lot of small business owners run into — they're good at the work they do, but they've never had a second set of eyes on their profit and loss statement or been pushed to explain, out loud, why a lender should bet on them.

    Who This Is For

The accelerator isn't a startup incubator. It's built for existing Main Street businesses — restaurants, retail shops, service providers, and similar operations — that want to grow rather than just survive. If you're still in the process of getting your business off the ground, resources like guides on LLC formation or getting an EIN number are a more immediate need. But if you've been operating for a while and you're staring down questions like whether to expand, hire, or finally apply for a loan, this is the kind of structured push that's hard to get on your own.

The program has already graduated 37 small business owners since it launched last year, which gives it a track record beyond a first-year pilot. That matters, because plenty of state small-business programs announce big and quietly fade. This one has a cohort of alumni to point to.

Why the Financial Review Piece Is the Real Value

Most small business owners can tell you their revenue off the top of their head. Fewer can tell you their gross margin by product line, their burn rate in a slow month, or how much runway they'd have if a major client left tomorrow. The accelerator's financial health review is designed to close that gap — and it's the kind of exercise that pays off well beyond the eight weeks of the program.

A clean set of financials is also what separates a fundable business from one that gets turned down. If your longer-term plan includes applying for an SBA loan or opening a dedicated business bank account to keep your finances organized in the first place, walking into that process with a business plan and a real handle on your numbers — rather than a shoebox of receipts — changes how lenders see you.

The Pitch Deck Piece Matters More Than It Sounds

A lot of small business owners hear "pitch deck" and assume it's a startup thing — something for tech founders chasing venture capital. But a pitch deck is really just a structured way of telling your business's story with numbers behind it, and that's useful whether you're talking to a bank loan officer, a potential business partner, or a landlord deciding whether to lease you a second location. The accelerator builds that skill directly into the curriculum instead of assuming owners already have it.

    How to Apply

Applications are open now through August 31, 2026. The program is run through the Delaware Division of Small Business in partnership with Launcher, and interested owners should apply directly through the Division of Small Business's official channels rather than through a third party. Given the two-week runway before the deadline, owners who are on the fence should treat this as a now-or-wait-a-year decision — Delaware hasn't announced another application window for 2026.

Why This Matters Even If You're Not in Delaware

If you run a business outside Delaware, the specific program won't apply to you, but the underlying lesson should. Most states fund some version of free or low-cost business coaching and financial review services through their Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs) or state commerce departments — and most of those programs are chronically underused, not because they're not useful, but because owners don't know they exist or assume they're only for startups.

If you've never had someone outside your business look hard at your profit and loss statement or challenge your growth plan, it's worth a search for what your own state offers. The Delaware program is a useful reminder that "free business coaching" isn't always a scam pitch in your inbox — sometimes it's a real state program with a real deadline, and the only cost of applying is a little bit of paperwork and two weeks of your time.
