ChatGPT vs Claude vs Meta Muse: Which AI Agent Is Worth Paying For in Your Small Business?
Three AI products now pitch themselves to small business owners as more than a chatbot: OpenAI's ChatGPT, Anthropic's Claude (with its Claude for Small Business package), and Meta's Muse for Small Business. They all promise to save you hours. They differ sharply on price, on how much they do without you, and on which of your tools they plug into. This guide compares them on what an owner actually has to decide.
Editorial note: this comparison was prepared with AI assistance, and one of the tools reviewed is made by the same company as the AI used. Every price and feature below comes from the sources listed at the end, not from the tools' own descriptions of themselves, and prices change often, so confirm before you buy.
Quick Verdict
- Best for owners who live in finance and operations: Claude. Its small business package is built around workflows such as payroll planning, month-end close, and invoice chasing, with an approve-before-it-acts design.
- Best all-around starting point for a mixed team: ChatGPT Business. It has the most familiar interface, predictable per-seat pricing, and a contractual no-training guarantee.
- Best for owners who want to try an agent at no cost: Meta Muse. It is free up to a usage cap and plugs into Instagram, Facebook and Meta ad accounts, which suits social-first sellers.
If you can only pick one and you run a service business with invoices, payroll and contracts, choose Claude. If your business is mostly selling through Instagram and Facebook, try Muse first because it costs nothing to start. If you want one tool every employee can open without training, choose ChatGPT Business.

ChatGPT: The Familiar Generalist
What it costs
ChatGPT has the widest price ladder. Free is ad-supported in the US. Go costs $8 a month, Plus $20, and Pro $100 or $200 depending on the usage tier. For teams, ChatGPT Business is $20 per seat per month billed annually or $25 billed monthly, with a two-seat minimum. According to reporting on pricing, OpenAI cut that annual rate by $5 on April 2, 2026.
What it does on its own
Agent mode is included with Plus, but not with Go, according to the pricing breakdown we reviewed. Business adds a shared workspace, an admin console, single sign-on, and connectors to tools such as Slack and Google Drive. The sources we reviewed did not detail how ChatGPT's agent handles approvals before it acts, or which accounting and payment tools it controls directly. Treat those as questions to test during a trial.
What it can't (or isn't shown to) do
We found no source describing a ready-made small business workflow pack comparable to Claude's. ChatGPT is a strong general assistant for drafting, research and analysis, but you will likely build your own routines.
Who it's for
Teams of two or more who want one familiar tool for everyone, plus owners who value a contractual guarantee that their data will not be used for training. Plus has only an opt-out toggle for training, so move to Business if you handle customer or financial data.
Claude: The Back-Office Specialist
What it costs
Claude for Small Business has no separate plugin fee. It runs on standard Claude plans that include Claude Cowork in the desktop app. A review of Claude pricing, last checked August 29, 2026, lists Pro at $17 per month billed annually (or $20 monthly), Team Standard at $20 per seat per month billed annually ($25 monthly), and Team Premium at $100 per seat per month billed annually ($125 monthly) with five times the usage of a Standard seat. Team plans require at least two users, and Enterprise pricing is $20 per seat plus usage billed at API rates.
What it does on its own
Anthropic describes Claude for Small Business as connectors and ready-to-run workflows: 15 agentic workflows and 15 skills across finance, operations, sales, marketing, HR and customer service. Examples include payroll planning, 30-day cash forecasts, month-end reconciliation and close packets, campaign planning, an invoice chaser, a margin analyzer, a contract reviewer and a lead triager. Listed integrations include PayPal (settlements, invoicing, disputes, refunds), Intuit QuickBooks, HubSpot, Canva and Docusign, along with Google Workspace and Microsoft 365.
What it can't do
Anthropic's page says that Claude does the work and you approve before anything sends, posts or pays, though you can let it run end to end once you are comfortable. Existing permissions carry over, so it cannot show users data their employees could not already see in those tools. On limits, Cowork runs in the desktop app rather than as a standalone mobile or browser system, and large files or repeated cross-app tasks may need Premium or Enterprise capacity.
Who it's for
Owners who spend their week on invoices, reconciliation, payroll and contracts, and who want an assistant that asks first. It is also the cleanest fit if you already use QuickBooks, PayPal or Docusign.
Meta Muse: The Free Social-Commerce Agent
What it costs
Meta announced Muse for Small Business on September 29, 2026. Retail Dive reports it is free up to a token-usage cap, with subscribers paying $20 to $100 per month for additional usage. Meta has not published the free cap in the coverage we reviewed, so you will not know how far free goes until you use it.
What it does on its own
Meta describes it as an AI agent that performs tasks across a range of business software. It draws on your Instagram and Facebook business accounts and connects with Shopify, Stripe, QuickBooks, Asana, Box, Canva, Zoom and other platforms, plus Meta ad accounts and Instagram analytics. The idea is that it already knows what you sell, how your brand sounds, and what customers ask about most.
What it can't do
Coverage describes human approval as optional: businesses can require it before Muse makes purchases or publishes information. Meta says it uses single-card numbers for new merchants and does not collect passwords or payment information. There is also a marketplace wrinkle: Amazon asked Meta to remove its e-commerce site from Muse because it had not consented to being available on the tool. The personal version launched in September for US and Canadian users, and the business coverage we reviewed did not state country availability.
Who it's for
Product sellers and local businesses whose customers find them on Instagram and Facebook, and any owner who wants to test an agent before committing budget.
Pricing Compared: What a 5-Person Team Would Pay
Using the published per-seat prices (annual billing), five seats cost roughly:
- ChatGPT Business: $20 x 5 = $100 per month.
- Claude Team Standard: $20 x 5 = $100 per month. Team Premium at $100 per seat would be $500 per month for five seats, and is the tier the pricing review associates with heavier Cowork usage.
- Meta Muse: $0 to start; paid usage tiers of $20 to $100 per month.
The seat price is nearly identical between ChatGPT Business and Claude Team Standard, so the decision should not hinge on a few dollars. Compare what you will use. Muse is cheapest on paper, but the cost is hidden in the unpublished free cap and in how much of your customer and brand data you are comfortable connecting.
Which One Should You Choose?
You run a service business with payroll and invoices
Choose Claude. The prebuilt finance and operations workflows and the approve-first design match what most owners fear about agents: something sending money or messages unprompted. Pair it with a clean set of books; see our guide to a profit and loss statement for what good reporting looks like.
You sell through Instagram, Facebook or Shopify
Start with Muse. It is free to try and sits where your customers and ad accounts already live. Turn on approval for purchases and publishing from day one.
You have several employees who need a general assistant
Choose ChatGPT Business. Per-seat billing, an admin console and a no-training guarantee make rollout simple. Pilot with five to ten monthly-billed seats before committing to annual billing.
You're a solo owner on a tight budget
Use Muse's free tier for social and customer tasks, and pay $20 a month for either Plus or Claude Pro only if you can name the hours it saves. There is no reason to buy all three.
Risks to Check Before You Connect Anything
- Permissions. Give an agent read access first. Add the ability to send, post or pay only after you have reviewed its work for a few weeks.
- Approval settings. Confirm that human approval is switched on for anything involving money, contracts or publishing.
- Bank and payment access. Keep your business bank account separate from personal accounts so an agent never touches both.
- Customer data. Read the data-use terms for the plan you choose. Business and team plans generally carry stronger no-training terms than free or individual ones.
- Insurance and contracts. If an agent drafts or reviews contracts, a lawyer should still sign off. Ask your agent-assisted workflow providers how errors are handled, and review your business insurance for technology-related gaps.
Bottom Line
There is no single winner, but there is a clear pick for each owner. Claude is the best fit for back-office work with built-in guardrails. Meta Muse is the best free way to try an agent if your customers live on Meta's apps. ChatGPT Business is the safest general-purpose choice for a team. Whichever you choose, run a 30-day pilot on one workflow, such as chasing late invoices or answering common customer questions, and measure hours saved before you expand.
Sources and Method
Pricing and feature details were drawn from Anthropic's Claude for Small Business page, The Rundown's Claude plan breakdown (checked August 29, 2026), TechCrunch and Retail Dive coverage of Meta Muse for Small Business, and CloudZero and Azterion reviews of ChatGPT pricing. Third-party pricing reviews can lag behind vendors' changes, so confirm current prices on each vendor's site. This guide will be updated as plans change.
