Top 7 Websites for New Business Owners in 2027

Starting a business in 2027 means sorting through a flood of online advice, and not all of it is reliable. These seven free websites cover the essentials, from registering your company and protecting your name to understanding your market and getting expert help.

    1. SBA.gov

The U.S. Small Business Administration's site is the best overall roadmap for new owners. Its step-by-step guides cover market research, business plans, funding, choosing a business structure and registration. It also explains SBA-backed loan programs and how to find a lender.

    2. Your state's Secretary of State website

Most businesses register at the state level, usually through the Secretary of State or a similar agency. This is where you form an LLC or corporation, check name availability, file annual reports and find state-specific rules. Bookmark it early, because you'll be back every year.

    3. Census Business Builder

The U.S. Census Bureau's free Census Business Builder lets you explore customer demographics, consumer spending and existing competitors for a specific location and industry. It's one of the best free ways to test whether a neighborhood can support your business before you sign a lease.

    4. IRS.gov (Small Business and Self-Employed)

Once your business exists, the IRS becomes a regular part of your life. The small business section explains how to get an EIN, which taxes apply to your structure, how estimated taxes work and what records to keep. Getting this right from day one is far easier than fixing it later.

    5. USPTO.gov

If your brand name, logo or product name matters (and it usually does), the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is where you search existing trademarks and learn how to protect your own. A quick search before you invest in branding can save you a painful rebrand.

    6. SCORE.org

SCORE connects owners with free volunteer mentors and offers free workshops and templates. New owners especially benefit from an experienced sounding board on pricing, hiring and growth decisions.

    7. America's SBDC

Small Business Development Centers offer free, confidential consulting and low-cost training at locations across the country. Your local SBDC can help with business plans, loan applications and local market questions, and its advisors often know the regional lenders and programs that national sites can't cover.

Use SBA.gov for the big picture, your state's site for registration, Census Business Builder for market research, the IRS for taxes, the USPTO for your brand, and SCORE and SBDCs for human guidance.

When you're ready to hire, our free small business tools help you plan the numbers, including an employee cost calculator with payroll tax data for every state.
